Jeffrey Alfier
At the Edge of Byzantium
Awaiting the next terrorist affair
we bow before sensory overload
unleashed amidst some addictive routine
in the symmetry of our reasoned lives.
Like waiting for occult blood to appear
we abide, suspicious as ever. Yet...
peering from our towers we discover
barbarians no longer need the gates
to enter and weave through the marketplace
and watch the well-dressed embrace the thresholds.
